New England Highway came in at number five because of congestion, but complaints have dropped since the $1.7 billion Hunter Expressway opened last March.
But it was Cessnock City Council roads that topped the list with 95 per cent of complaints made about poor road surface and frustration of travelling along Broke, Wollombi and McDonalds roads.
Almost 12,000 motorists across NSW and ACT took part in this year’s National Roads and Motorists Association Seeing Red on Roads survey.
Also on the list was the Pacific Highway for congestion and John Renshaw Drive, where the freeway starts and ends.
Complaints about the New England Highway have dropped dramatically because a lot of traffic has been transferred off the highway and onto the Hunter Expressway, NRMA president Kyle Loades said.
“The Hunter Expressway is a perfect example of what happens when you build good roads.
“We call on governments to look at ways they can help local councils with funding local roads to be brought up to standard.”
Councils have a backlog of road work and don’t have the money to fix the problems, Mr Loades said.
