Workers have begun to set up a temporary access ramp for the pedestrian bridge near the roundabout at the intersection of Les Darcy Drive, Church Street and Cessnock Road, where the overpass will be built.
The permanent access ramp will be temporarily removed as part of preparations for construction on the overpass, which is part of the state government’s $45 million Maitland roundabouts program.
Maitland MP Robyn Parker said she asked for the pedestrian bridge to remain accessible because it was a key route for walkers to cross the highway to get from central Maitland to Maitland Park.
She said preparation was still taking place, but construction of the overpass was expected to begin in January.
“There is quite a lot of work going on down there at the moment,” Ms Parker said.
The two-lane eastbound overpass will be 430 metres long and will connect to the highway about 400 metres from the western side of the roundabout and 550 metres from the eastern side.
Work to widen an infamous bottle neck on the New England Highway at Rutherford, between Racecourse and Regiment roads, was finished ahead of schedule last month.
