This is due, in part, to the event moving to a new home – the Singleton Showground.
Since the event’s inception in 1986 it has been held at the Singleton saleyards but with ever-increasing numbers in the paraders competition, and the number of schools entering, it was relocated to the roomier showground.
A record number of steers and schools in this year’s competition were easily accommodated at the new site.
To enable the move a cattle crush was installed at the showgrounds thanks to assistance from the NSW Minerals Council.
The move also enabled the staging of two popular competitions on the first night of the event – the fancy dressed steer class and the farmers challenge.
First place in the fancy dressed steer competition went to “Ooshi”, entered by Tuggerah Lakes High School.
Gosford High School students won the farmers challenge.
Day two of the event saw the judging of the paraders competition with Lachlan Ware, Farrer Agricultural High School, Tamworth winning the 14 years class and then taking out the champion ribbon.
The reserve champion was Luke Boswell from Brisbane Waters Secondary College.
Paraders judge was Naomi Evans, Tamworth, whose husband Roger judged the hoof classes.
Grand champion on the hoof was a Limousin cross entered by Karleen Kelehear in the unled section.
The entry was unplaced on the hook.
Most successful exhibitors of the show were Ross and Julie Wilkinson, of Singleton.
They exhibited both the grand champion on the hook with an Angus cross entry that was champion unled carcase.
They also exhibited the reserve champion unled carcase with a Charolais x Angus entry.
Champion school’s carcase was an Angus exhibited by Brigid Thomas, of Branxton, and the reserve champion was also an Angus shown by Tim Vincent, Carinya Christian College, Tamworth.
The overall school champion exhibit was a Limousin entry from Farrer Agricultural High School that won the champion ribbon on the hoof and won its class on the hook.
