Roderick Macdonald, reportedly once held in Australia, is to be questioned by British police about a paedophile ring possibly linked to the abduction of Madeline.
Macdonald was also accused of sexual assault of an eight-year-old girl in Australia, Britain's Daily Mirror reported.
The man, who had most recently been living in Gozo, Malta, is to be extradited to Britain where he will be jailed for sexual assault of a girl aged under 13, the Times of Malta reported.
Macdonald was reportedly in Algarve, Portugal, when the three-year-old girl went missing in 2007, setting off an international search to find her.
He was arrested on Monday in Malta, the Times of Malta reported.
Scotland Yard detectives have returned to Algarve to seek follow-up interviews with three of four McCann case suspects they questioned in July, Britain's Daily Express reported.
Police will also propose new tests on DNA found in Madeline's bedroom that did not belong to workers at the holiday resort where her family was staying at the time, the Daily Mirror reported.
