Eve Witherspoon, who is not a member of the RSL, was still more than happy to be asked to complete two squares to one of three quilts to be raffled in Sydney on November 1 – 100 years since troops left Albany in Western Australia to fight in World War I.
Money raised from the raffles will go to RSL LifeCare, to the State President’s Christmas Appeal and to the Disaster Fund.
“I contacted the RSL and some material was sent to me from Sydney,” Mrs Witherspoon said.
“After completing two squares, I was delighted when I was asked to do another five.
“One is based on the photograph of my father John Cavanagh who enlisted in the Australian Expeditionary Force in 1939.
“I am proud the RSL asked me to complete these squares for the quilts as I like to support the people in our armed services.
“And I am proud to be the second woman from Maitland who has done these.”
One square was also contributed by Maitland woman Peggy Hume, whose husband Fred served in the second 30th Battalion during World War II.
Mr Hume spent three years as a prisoner of war after Singapore fell to the Japanese.
