Ms Aitchison said the announcement showed that the Liberal party was in “disarray”, with Ms Parker being one of the few Liberal Hunter MPs left unscathed by recent corruption inquiries into political donations.
“While Robyn and I didn’t always see eye-to-eye, it is sad that the disarray of the Liberal party and its neglect of the Hunter has clearly forced Robyn into this decision,” she said.
“On a personal level, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Robyn for being the first female member for Maitland and wish Robyn and her family the very best.”
Ms Aitchison said the Liberals were focused on what was best for Sydney and had forgotten electorates in the Hunter.
“Regardless of the personal qualities of whoever stands for the Liberal party in March, it is clear that the Liberal government will continue to ignore the needs and wants of our community,” she said.
“I will continue to fight for Maitland at every opportunity, because we deserve better than what the Liberal government has been dishing out to us.”
