The Raymond Terrace lawn bowler defeated Sherriff 31-23 on his home green in Tuesday night’s singles final at Ettalong.
Scott, aged 32 who was contesting his first NSW State Championships, said the win had yet to sink in when he spoke to the Mercury yesterday.
“It all feels a little bit surreal,” Scott said.
“Everything just flew by so quickly and it was hard to take it all in.
“It’s the biggest and best thing I’ve ever done.”
Since starting at Raymond Terrace a decade ago, Lennon’s previous best in the statewide knockout-style competition was quarter-finals at zone level.
But in 2014 he took out the Newcastle zone crown with seven straight wins before adding another four victories to the streak on Monday and Tuesday.
It was his first win at state level, for the round of 16, which proved the most difficult with a narrow 31-30 win against last year’s runner-up Josh Andriske of West Dubbo completed on a dramatic final end after trailing by six in the closing stages.
“I came from no where in that one,” Scott said.
“I was 28-22 behind and he reached 30 before I did, but I was able to get out of that one.”
Scott then beat Bruce Lack 31-13 in the quarters and accounted for 2006 singles champion and former Australian representative Gerard Beath of Cowra 31-25 in the semi-final before accounting for Sherriff in the decider.
It was a special moment for Scott, not only because of the tournament prestige and the quality of
opposition, but because of family connections.
“It was my first state title and to beat him [Sherriff], renowned as one of the world’s best, on his home turf in front of his home crowd was unbelievable,” Scott said.
“And there is a bit of a Scott dynasty at Ettalong with my dad, uncles and pop all having played there and featuring on the honour board.”
Scott’s father David was rink side for the magic moment.
Scott, the husband of Australian women’s representative Natasha, brought the trophy home to Raymond Terrace Bowling Club yesterday.
In the senior singles section Beresfield’s Mick Beesley missed out on the silverware after being beaten by Warilla’s Geoff McGillvray 31-28 in Tuesday night’s final at the same Central Coast venue.
In the fours competition Kurri Kurri will feature in today’s semi-final after Andrew Rees, Aaron Appleby, Michael Smith and Nathan Dawson won both of their matches yesterday.
The triples will be held tomorrow and Saturday.
