Mr Lane owns a building amid Maitland City Council’s multi-million dollar revamp in The Levee precinct. He visited the zone this week, spoke to his tenants, and decided to waive this month’s rent.
Mr Lane also threw out a challenge to other property owners to do whatever it took to support businesses in the construction zone during this tough time.
While Mr Lane will be out of pocket several thousand dollars due to his generous stance, it is also an astute business move.
If a business is forced to pack up and pull up its shingle, the empty shop will bring zero rental return.
Mr Lane’s gesture comes hot on the heels of council’s announcement of promotions designed to encourage shoppers to make the most of The Levee in the lead-up to Christmas.
These inducements include the chance to win a Ford Ecosport Titanium with every purchase of $25 in the work zone, and $20 shopping vouchers – valid at retailers in the construction area – with a single transaction of $40 or more.
The Maitland Mercury and its associated products have also thrown support behind the precinct.
A promotion kicks off in today’s edition of the Lower Hunter Star and will continue weekly throughout The Levee construction.
Yes, the High Street mall area is evolving into a boutique shopping and dining destination that capitalises on the majesty of the riverfront location.
Don’t wait until it’s finished before you take a look. There are about 50 retailers there today that need your support and have plenty to offer.
