To highlight the school’s plight, residents will auction the building urging bidders to make an offer on what could become a piece of real estate.
“Forget children, education and the future, think change of use ... a crematorium, spa resort, wedding or conference centre, education museum,” Save Our School Wollombi Committee member Kes Harper said.
“Or better still, four condominium apartments designed with all the glamour and style of a sewerage plant.”
A review of the heritage-listed site began last year with parents concerned the Department of Education had already made a decision to close the school.
A spokesperson from the department said it was in consultation with parents about the most appropriate placement for the school’s five students.
A community survey showed that 96 per cent of respondents supported maintaining a choice of schools in the area.
More than 180 people signed an online petition at www.change.org to save the school.
“On Saturday, [November 1], we’re going to bring down the hammer on this old school, putting aside politics and making a mockery of the reality,” Ms Harper said. “So come and hear the exciting bids on this historic, sandstone property set in a prime location - opposite the cemetery so quiet neighbours.”
Bidding starts at 3pm.
