A tragic accident on Maitland’s Hunter River two-and-a-half years ago left him a quadriplegic with no movement from the neck down.
According to his mum Di Conroy, Mitch’s injury is a replica of that suffered by the Knights’ Alex McKinnon.
Unlike Alex, Mitch has been confined to bed since his accident. He relies on round-the-clock care from Di and a team of carers.
But he dreams of again one day walking. Of feeling the sun on his skin. Of casting a fishing line in the water and breathing fresh air.
Such simple pleasures.
Maitland, in the past you have dug deep to help Mitch and his mum. The Mercury recently delivered a cheque for more than $7000, which was the last instalment from your generous donations to the Pitch in for Mitch campaign.
Most of that money will be spent on medications, care equipment and other life-saving essentials.
But Mitch needs more than that. He’s a young man. He needs to feel the sun on his skin and breathe fresh air.
Together, we can give Mitch the 21st birthday of his dreams.
His mum Di has set aside $500 from the last round of donations to start saving to buy a lifter, to help him get into his wheelchair.
He and his mum also need a van that will accommodate him, and his chair, and again allow him to explore the world beyond his bedroom walls.
So please dig deep once more and donate either at the Maitland Mercury office at 555 High Street, Maitland, or to the Pitch in for Mitch’s 21st account at any branch of The Mutual Building Society.
