More than 20 women from Red Hat Society groups across the Hunter gathered in the Heritage Mall on Friday to show their support for traders.
First stop was the Espresso Retro Cafe.
“When the ladies heard about how the traders were struggling they organised to come in and show us how much they cared,” cafe owner Kandie Bond said.
“As a result we sold more cake in one day than we usually sell in about three.”
Ms Bond has encouraged other community members to do the same.
“The word is out that we [the traders] are doing it tough, but hopefully people will see that making such a small effort makes such a big difference to us,” she said.
“We are just so impressed by this wonderful gesture and it has made me realise that while Maitland has grown, it’s still retained that country-town mentality where everyone still pitches in to help one another.”
