Winsome Jacko set the track alight when he stopped the clock at 21.98 seconds to win his heat last Thursday and lower Little Ed’s 2012 record of 22.11s.
What made the victory even more impressive was that Winsome Jacko did it from box eight and was near last out of the boxes.
Winsome Jacko has drawn box six for today’s final with litter mate and second fastest heat winner Winsome Mission (22.20s) in box five and Winsome Blue (22.51s) in box four.
Finn hinted, however, that Winsome Mission was the best of the litter at break-in but had gone off a little since then. But his 22.20s heat win puts him right in the mix if Winsome Jacko strikes any trouble.
Maitland Greyhound Club sponsorship and promotions manager Fred Robertson said while Finn appears to hold the key to the race with her trio there is a lot of early pace across the field and that the other finalists cannot be discounted.
Londonderry trainer Christine Proctor is also well represented in the final with El Grand Senor and Oh Em Gee litter mates Lord Gee (22.45s box one) and Master Gee (22.39s box seven).
The local hopes rest with Greta trainers Wal Simmons and Allan Mcgowan and Raworth trainer Robert Green.
Simmons’ charge Gauge This, a son of Lochinvar Marlow and Hail Queenie, will jump from box two after winning his heat in 22.73s.
Mcgowan has Airbourne Miss, a daughter of Knocka Norris and Dis Low Kate, in box seven after an impressive 22.38s heat win from box eight last week.
Lord Licrick, a son of Maitland Gold Cup winner Oaks Road and Myron’s Angel, rounds out the field for Green after a 22.51s heat win.
With a lot of early pace in the race Robertson was excited by the prospect that punters could see another track record performance today.
Robertson’s best bet of the day is the Jason Mackay-trained Zipping Midge in race two, the Commercial Hotel Morpeth Maiden over 400m. Zipping Midge clocked 22.37s when second to new track record holder Winsome Jacko last week.
Racing starts at 3.59pm with the Future Stars final at 6.02pm.
