THORNTON PARK V CITY UNITED
City United went into Saturday having all but secured first innings points after posting 8-321 before taking three quick wickets late on day one.
On day two they quickly extinguished any hope Thornton Park had of a fightback, with Paul Brownlee removing Elliott Thompson and Jonathon Momsen.
Matthew Gabriel provided the only real resistance for the home side, finishing with a gritty half-century, and, while veterans Ricky Dent and Peter Gabriel both made starts, Thorton were bowled out for 137.
City United elected not to chase an outright victory in warm conditions at Tenambit Oval, but their fourth consecutive win sees last season’s runners up out in front having yet to taste defeat.
EASTERN SUBURBS V KURRI WESTON
Already leading by 192 runs after dismissing Eastern Suburbs for 107, Kurri Weston wasted no time in making their advantage count at East Maitland Park.
The home side were sent back in and were dismantled by an all-round bowling performance from Kurri Weston as Steve Abel, Hayden Fox, Mathew Zechel and Josh Tuckwell claimed two wickets a piece.
Haydn Adams was the standout for Easts in the second innings and posted 65 before Fox ran him out.
Kurri Weston skipper Tyler Power said he was pleased to see his side rebound after two disappointing performances.
“We needed to get back into it and it ended up working out well; I think that’s our first outright win as a club, so it was a bit historic for us,” he said.
“We took all our catches for a change, and that was the big difference for us.
“[The outright] leaves us in reasonable shape – we’ve got blokes that haven’t really scored any runs yet, but hopefully we can keep building and be playing our best cricket later on in the season.”
The result saw Kurri Weston move to third ahead of next week’s home game with Raymond Terrace.
NORTHERN SUBURBS V WESTERN SUBURBS
Northern Suburbs were out to defend 294 without the services of strike bowler Lincoln Mills, who was on representative duty, at Lorn Park.
After a bright start from Wests, it was Tim Field who made the breakthrough, dismissing Michael Rees for 29, and removing Tom Rumbel shortly afterwards.
Wests were able to steady through Luke Merchant and Mark Edmonds, but it was Mark Curran’s 83 that saw the visitors nearly snatch an unlikely victory.
Eventually Curran ran out of partners, and was the final wicket to fall, as Wests were bowled out for 254 from 74.4 overs, 40 short of the target.
Norths’ third win of the campaign sees the defending champions sit in second ahead of next weekend’s bye.
