The 16-year-old from Largs stopped the clock in 12.14 seconds and collected a $12,000 winners’ cheque at Australia’s second biggest handicap race on Sunday.
Newman’s coach Bryan Gulliver said it was a fantastic achievement on what was a magical day for the Maitland Grossmann High School student.
“He is the youngest ever, has the fastest time, collected $12,000, did a PB [personal best] and just ran really well,” Gulliver said.
“You can’t ask for much more than that.”
Newman is the second Maitland-based male to claim the Queanbeyan Gift, following the success of Rutherford’s Daniel Burgess from 2005 when he started from 7.75m and clocked a time of 12.22s.
East Maitland’s Kara Bull won the female footrace at Queanbeyan in 2011.
On the weekend Newman was the front marker at 12m and eventually finished a narrow 0.02s ahead of identical twin Jack (9.5m), who took out the 70m event in Queanbeyan.
This reverses the result from two weeks ago with Jack taking out the Macksville Gift and Tom the shorter event.
It has been a successful month overall for the Maitland Sprint ConneXion team, headed by Gulliver, clinching about $20,000 in prizemoney from two NSW Premier Track League events.
“We picked up around 15 or 16 grand in prizemoney at Queanbeyan and around $5000 at Macksville,” Gulliver said.
“Everybody is running well and it has been a really good couple of weeks.”
Also at Queanbeyan carnival Thornton’s Jake Ryder won the novice 120m and was second in the 70m while father Phil finished fourth in the veterans.
Metford’s Kim Fletcher took out the 600m, was second in the veterans and third in the 300m.
This follows the Macksville event where Fletcher won the 300m and finishing third in the women’s gift.
Tim Esthebach and Ryder were second and third respectively in the men’s main race.
