One in three women will report having experienced physical or sexual violence at some point in her life.
The victims are not merely statistics; they are wives, sisters, mothers, daughters and friends.
Good men cannot and will not sit on the sidelines while those they love are at risk of harm.
This violence perpetrated by men against women must stop, and it is up to men to stop it.
White Ribbon is Australia’s only national, male-led campaign to end men’s violence against women.
The campaign is a means for men to speak out against and challenge the attitudes and behaviours of a minority of men who use or condone violence against women.
I challenge all men of Maitland and the Lower Hunter to let the world know where they stand, and swear the oath:
“My oath I swear never to commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women. This is my oath.”
I have taken the oath on the White Ribbon website (www.whiteribbon.org.au) and challenge you to do the same.
Visit the website, click the “Act now” tab, then click “Swear now”.
By swearing, I stand with thousands of Australians determined to treat all women with respect and intervene safely when someone else doesn’t.
Taking the oath is a powerful symbol of your intention to be part of real change.
Stand with me.
