About 2.30pm, police attended a house in Prince Street where they arrested a 34-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman.
After searching the house police allegedly found a shortened .22 calibre rifle, a Stoeger rifle, ammunition, cash, pepper spray and drugs.
Police believed the drugs to be methamphetamines but would not comment on the quantity.
The man and woman were arrested and taken to Cessnock police station.
The man was charged with nine firearms offences as well as drug possession and having stolen goods.
The woman was also charged with drug possession and having stolen property.
Central Hunter crime manager Detective Inspector John Zdrilic said he was happy with the performance of his officers and the investigation that led to the arrests.
“It’s important that those kinds of firearms don’t make it out on to the streets,” he said.
“Central Hunter police will remain vigilant and I want to reinforce and encourage anyone with information about illegal guns to come forward and do their bit to help make our area an even safer place.”
The man and woman will appear before Cessnock Local Court on December 10.
