Do you turn into a cow? Or do you act like a bit of a goose?
The Maitland Liquor Accord will launch their Safer Nights Out initiative this morning to help make the city a safer place.
The campaign, with the tagline “Don’t let a good night turn feral”, emphasises the importance of peer responsibility through encouraging people to recognise the annoying animal-like behaviour of their friends when they have too much to drink.
It also helps people act on their friend’s inappropriate behaviour and prevent a good night turning feral.
A number of the city’s pubs and clubs have signed up to support the campaign, including The Pourhouse, Lorn Park Bowls, Sports and Recreation Club, The George Tavern, East Maitland Bowling Club, Bushrangers Bar and Grill, Largs, Beresfield Bowling Club, Windsor Castle Hotel and Paterson Tavern.
The project will feature coasters, posters and bar cards that include six familiar characters to show the common types of annoying behaviours people are fed up with when they go out.
Maitland Liquor Accord executive secretary Fiona Buchanan said the aim was to launch the campaign in time for the Christmas silly season.
“It was a good way of getting on the front foot to target antisocial behaviours that you see around Christmas time and into the new year,” she said.
“We worked with the creative team at Nodding Dog. They’ve done a fantastic job on the graphics and the message.
“The research has shown that peers are a key influence on behaviour, which is why we’ve gone for that cheeky approach.
“Hopefully it will catch people’s attention, and that younger audience is our demographic.”
The accord also thanked the police and businesses for supporting the campaign.
Patrons will be able to get their first look at the campaign from Monday.
The initiative was developed with the support of Maitland City Council.
