People spoke of two cars that smashed head-on at the curve in the road as it merges with Lindsay Street. Several people were injured.

A pile of wreckage from the recent accident was still heaped up near a faded road sign yesterday. 

Several residents have called for a sign that shows the approach to Raymond Terrace Road to be moved 100 metres or more along Lindsay Street toward High Street, to warn ­drivers of what they said was a dangerous curve in the road.

Other residents said Maitland City Council should install reflective ­rubber devices near the curve.

Dozens of cars travelling from Raymond Terrace Road into Lindsay Street were seen swerving across a double white line as they reached the curve when the Mercury visited the scene yesterday.

“I think it would be a simple matter for Maitland City Council to install reflective rubber devices so people know they are on a dangerous corner,” Gary Hope, who lives near the crash site, said.

“Something is needed at this ­intersection where people are cutting the corner.

“So many cars cross the double unbroken lines that something should be done about it.”

Resident Amanda Moult called for reflective signs to be erected.

“I would also like to see more police patrols here because so many drivers are speeding,” she said.

“At night it is sometimes like a race track, with cars hurtling past.”

Both residents said they were ­concerned about the safety of so many people crossing the road as they walked to and from Victoria Street Station. 

“In the latest smash here, they had to cut one injured man out of his car,” one man said. “This is a confusing curve in the road for many drivers travelling from Lindsay Street into Raymond Terrace Road because they don’t spot the faded sign until it is too late.”

A spokeswoman for Maitland City Council said no one was available on the weekend to comment, but she was certain the issue would be looked into.
