The roundabout, median strips and road reconstruction at Arthur Street is the biggest project Maitland City Council has conducted in-house.
The roundabout is the focal point of the work, which connects the West Mall shopping precinct and Club Maitland City to busy Arthur Street more safely.
“It’s tidied the intersection up and it will cater to the growth of business and shops,” council construction and maintenance manager Ash Kavanagh said.
“The way the guys performed the work and the quality of construction is very pleasing.”
The project came in on time and under budget, which enabled council to reseal Hillview and Weblands streets as well.
A median strip means cars can no longer duck from Hillview Street, across Arthur Street, into KFC.
The median strip also prevents cars from waiting to turn right into KFC off Arthur Street, which had caused congestion at the New England Highway intersection.
“Every one in council should be congratulated for the work,” Cr Henry Meskauskas said.
“Every time I come up here to the shopping centre everyone is really positive.”
Club Maitland City allowed the council to use its land as a depot for machinery and material.
Through open discussions and co-operation, council was also able to open the roundabout ahead of the club’s renovation opening.
Cr Meskauskas, who is also a Club Maitland City director, said he was pleased with the result from both sides.
“The outcome is brilliant and it’s money well spent,” he said.
The project included three new bus shelters on Arthur Street.
Council sourced $1 million from a special rate variation to complete the project.
