The 21-year-old went within half a second of his maiden victory in the Victorian town of You Yangs on Sunday, which ranked him No. 2 ahead of the final two rounds in Thredbo and Toowoomba next year.
“It was my best result at nationals, I had only been as high as fourth before,” he said.
“So I was happy with that and felt pretty good.”
It was a dramatic end to the final with Mudd narrowly missing out despite producing an impressive performance.
“I was seeded third after qualifying, so I went down third last,” he said.
“The next bloke came down and I had a faster time so I moved into the hot seat, but the final ride beat me by 0.5 seconds.”
Mudd’s next challenge will be an endurance event at Mount Bulla at the end of January.
The second round of the national series in Thredbo will be held from February 6 to 8 followed later that same month by the series clincher in Toowoomba.
The National Championships will be held in Victorian town of Bright between March 12 and 15.
