Maitland MP Robyn Parker announced that East Maitland RSL sub-branch was successful in its grant application for the work yesterday.
“I am delighted this funding will help to restore East Maitland cenotaph and congratulate East Maitland RSL sub-branch,” she said.
“The East Maitland cenotaph stands as a constant reminder of the sacrifices of our local servicemen and women, who have served overseas in conflicts in defence of our freedoms.”
The money will help relocate the ornamental fences, replacement of corner posts, repair the existing stone fence, as well as install garden edging and kerbing.
The NSW Community War Memorial Fund has supported 21 projects in this 2014-15 round worth $116,000.
The fund is dedicated to the restoration and preservation of war memorials in towns and suburbs statewide.
“Around 130,000 men and women from NSW served during the Great War and during the Centenary of Anzac period it’s important that we appropriately commemorate local diggers from Maitland who have fought to protect the privileges we now enjoy,” Ms Parker said.
Minister for Veterans Affairs Victor Dominello said the fund provided grants of up to $10,000 for individual projects.
“It is about making sure our memorials continue to stand proud for future generations,” he said.
