What endears the project to everyone in Lochinvar is what the principal, Paul Greaves, said: “When it is not being used by the school, the new hall will be available to the community to use.”
The project has become possible after the school heard last week that it would receive funding of $2.4 million.
This, coupled with other money provided by the Catholic Diocesan Building Fund, will enable construction to start progressing next year.
When finished, the hall – to be known as Mackillop Place – will be big enough to cater for 1100 people.
Facilities will include a cafe, hospitality kitchen, change rooms, storage rooms, space for theatrical and musical productions, and a basketball court.
It will provide a covered space for students that will enable the school to hold events at night and in all weather.
“This hall will be a great community asset as well as a great school asset and it can also be used by other primary schools in the area,” Mr Greaves said. “Our school will have 720 students next year and it is growing all the time.”
Student Laura Rumbel said: “It is very exciting because our hall will benefit everyone in Lochinvar – not just our school.”
