The Green Hills pub had a huge response to their community Christmas hamper drive, with more than 100 of the precious baskets collected and put together last week.

The George’s initial goal was to collect enough goods for 50 hampers but after a number of businesses and residents inundated them with donations they were able to double that number.

The hampers were distributed to people at the Maitland Neighbourhood Centre and Carrie’s Place.

Staff, customers and friends of the George gave up their time to put the hampers together on Friday. 

George Tavern director Janine Redman said she was grateful for the support.

“This hamper drive has shown what true community spirit is all about at Christmas,” she said.

“We normally set up a Christmas gift and food drive for the neighbourhood centre.

“But with the amount of job losses and other factors within our community, we decided to also support Carrie’s Place.

“They also do an amazing job of supporting those in need.

“After speaking with Jenny from Carrie’s Place it became evident that the priority for donations this year was food for these families who are struggling to make ends meet.

The George’s bistro team also collected monetary donations from customers who wanted to contribute to the drive.

 The hampers included non-perishable items and toiletries, enough for a family of four.

Last month the George Tavern was awarded one of the top gongs, Best Individual Operator, at the AHA NSW Awards for Excellence.
