Here are the four nominees for the 2014 Maitland Sportsperson junior team of the year.
ALL SAINTS COLLEGE, ST JOSEPH’S CAMPUS, LOCHINVAR (rugby league)
Sometimes you just get a good crop of players and this seems to be the case at All Saints College, St Joseph’s Campus, Lochinvar.
For the second straight year St Joey’s featured in all four finals – under 13s to under 16s – of the annual Knights Knockout.
This time around they produced the clean sweep and officials believe they are one of, if not, the first high school to achieve the feat in the rugby league competition’s 30-plus year history.
These results qualified all sides for the NSW All Schools Carnival with the under 16s going all the way to claim a state title.
MAITLAND GOLF CLUB (junior pennants)
Maitland Golf Club’s junior pennants team created history in claiming a Hunter River District Golf Association title in 2014.
In doing so the squad became the first from one club to win three consecutive junior pennant crowns, remaining unbeaten in finals since 2012.
And it all came down to the dramatic end with Zac Wolf three shots down with five holes to go, fighting back to force a play-off before sealing the decider.
Will Fraser had been down by two with three to play before triumphing on the 18th and outgoing skipper Hayden Gulliver won comfortably and Clayton Small squared his tie.
MAITLAND SAINTS (Australian rules – junior girls)
The Maitland Saints Youth Girls’ AFL team won the young clubs first premiership of the modern era by 70 points on a wet Newcastle No.1 Sportsground on August 30.
The squad produced one last crushing performance after going through the season undefeated and progressing to the grand final on the back of a 195-8 semi-final victory.
The decider started as a close affair, but the class of the girls showed through in the end with a 10-goals-to-one second half.
The team was in its first year in 2014 and five of the nine players hailed from Maitland in a combined entity with Lake Macquarie.
MAITLAND NETBALL ASSOCIATION (junior representative)
Maitland’s junior representative netball teams claimed not one, but two, NSW titles at the 2014 State Age Championships.
The tournament was played in the middle of the year, with the under 12s taking out division two in Illawarra and the under 14s reigning supreme in division three in Campbelltown.
The sides dropped just one game each from a combined 35 played across the three days of competition and both teams will now go up a division next year.
“To win one is wonderful but two is just brilliant,” Maitland Netball Association president Jenny Fullford said, “for a country team we are stoked with it.”
