Road construction is under way, with also pavers being laid and trees being planted on the southern side of the old mall.
Work on the northern side of the road between Bourke Street and Bulwer Street will continue in the coming weeks.
Maitland City Council civil engineering project manager Greg Blaze said rain had delayed work on the bus stop outside the post office.
He said it meant the bus stop would remain closed for an extra week and would reopen on Tuesday, January 26, if weather permitted.
“There’s plenty of activity going on and there are a lot of resources on site,” Mr Blaze said.
“In the last week or so we’ve had some wet weather, which has held up some of the works.”
Mr Blaze said the pedestrian paving had been completed and businesses at The Levee remained accessible.
“There are locations where people can cross over the road, which is fenced off and safe,” he said.
Mr Blaze said work was still on track for completion on the March deadline and the contractor, Landscape Solutions, had allocated extra resources so it would meet the target.
“They are working pretty much around the clock on different shifts,” he said.
Scheduled works for The Levee in the next fortnight include excavation, construction of kerb, guttering and road at the Elgin and High streets intersection.
Excavation, road paving and water connection will also occur in zone 12, which is the southern side of the road between Subway and the former Godfrey’s store.
The $6.7 million first stage of work involves reopening a section of High Street to traffic, between Bourke and Elgin streets, that has been a pedestrian-only zone since the late 1980s.
The second stage of work will involve the removal of three buildings in the mall to allow council to establish an archway that will allow pedestrians easy access to the banks of the Hunter River.
