Two men have been reportedly going from door to door in the East Maitland area this week offering residents a free laptop computer courtesy of the government.
In order to get their free computer, the con artists say, residents must hand over personal details such as tax file numbers, Centrelink identification numbers, birth certificates and bank details.
A warning was posted on social media, on the Maitland Area Community Notice Board Facebook page, on Tuesday night.
The resident who made the post urged anyone who encountered the scammers, who he described as being of Indian appearance, to contact Maitland police on 4934 0200 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 immediately.
He said the men were last seen on Tuesday entering Skilton Avenue in East Maitland.
Police have previously told the Mercury that residents should remember that if an offer sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.
