The 17-year-old All Saints College St Mary’s Campus student was named Maitland Young Citizen of the Year yesterday during the annual Australia Day celebrations at Maitland Park.
Miss Skinner campaigns for a range of groups but she is particularly interested in sport and investigating the role that high finance can play in reducing the gap between rich and poor people in society.
She wants to use the title of Young Citizen of the Year to encourage other young people in Maitland to become more actively involved in social issues.
Miss Skinner told the Mercury that she was shocked about being named the winner from the pool of 13 nominees.
“I am completely surprised,” she said.
“I was just happy to be nominated. This is so special.
“When I do the things that I do, I don’t expect anything [recognition] I just get in and have a go.”
While Miss Skinner was named in the Young Citizen category, Farley woman Rhiannon Varley won the senior category and Metford’s Cassandra Fayers took out the junior division yesterday.
“We are very fortunate to have so many talented and community-minded young people in our city,” the mayor of Maitland, Cr Peter Blackmore, said.
“Caprice and Cassandra have achieved so much at such a young age and are role models for all young Australians.”
