A renewed push for a Maitland Hall of Fame has finally got across the line after being first mooted as a concept almost two decades ago.
And although there will be sticking points about eligibility criteria the primary notion remains unchanged - celebrating Maitland’s finest, sooner rather than later.
There are many people who have helped shape this city into what we know and love across arts, business, academia, sport and public service.
They are often the topic of tales from years gone by as people remember the good old days of High Street or the golden age of the Pumpkin Pickers or the kids from Maitland making their mark further afield in their chosen careers.
And while some of these players, stars and politicians have already been recognised around the city in various ways, this fresh hall of fame approach provides a snapshot of the community in a one-stop-shop style.
At this stage the planned proposal approved by Maitland City Council last night has the hall of fame to be introduced as part of its website.
This would give those from postcode 2320, those from all over the Hunter and even those from around the world to discover a glimpse of Maitland’s character in a single click.
There could also be scope to create a permanent physical home for the hall of fame - maybe at the town hall or the art gallery - to further enhance the city’s historical links.
An early glance to prospective inductees reveals the likes of boxer Les Darcy, politician Dr HV Evatt and actress Ruth Cracknell.
And the idea of councillor Brian Burke to make criteria flexible, reported in today’s Mercury, only widens the scope to honour out city’s best.
