The car was travelling along Bligh Street, near the intersection of Elizabeth Street, yesterday morning when it stalled in the flood water.
Nearby residents helped the woman get out of the car, which was trapped in water that reached above the level of the car’s door handles.
Bligh Street resident Henry Sujecki, who has lived in the street his entire life, said the flood waters had risen to an unpassable level within about 40 minutes after a heavy shower began at about lunch time.
He said the street had become more susceptible to floods in recent years.
“In the 55 flood it didn’t get much higher than this,” Mr Sujecki said.
“When the Pasha Bulka sank it came up to our veranda.
“There’s a pipe that goes under the railway that blocks up. It’s not much fun, all the cleaning up when it gets under your house.
“This time around it might take two or three hours to go down once the rain stops.”
According to the Bureau of Meteorology’s Tocal weather station, Maitland received 28mm of rain between 9am and 3pm yesterday.
