The 22-year-old nutrition student from Newcastle finished in the top ten at the Miss Universe beauty pageant in Miami this week. She hopes to use the experience to launch a TV career in either presenting or acting, having appeared in several television commercials.
"I would like to something more like a television series or Home and Away or something along those lines - one of the iconic TV shows would be a bit of a dream come true," she told AAP from Miami on Tuesday.
Martin competed in the swimwear and evening wear parts of the pageant before being eliminated from the compeition.
She said she began to feel nervous about five minutes before the show began but the butterflies quickly dissipated.
"I felt like I was about to vomit and then as soon as I walked out on stage and those lights hit me the nerves went," she said.
She enjoyed the swimwear section because she liked the walk.
"It's more me, it's more happy, it's a sexier bouncier walk and I was able to smile and have a lot of fun with it," Martin said.
"The evening gown one was a little bit slower and my gown was quite tight so I couldn't really strut as much, and I love strutting on stage."
Martin will spend the next few days in Miami with boyfriend Angus Hood, then the pair plan to go to Disney World in Orlando with Miss USA Nia Sanchez, who Martin shared a room with, and her partner.
Carnival has come a few weeks early to the Caribbean city of Barranquilla where residents took to the streets to show their hometown pride after local girl Paulina Vega was crowned Miss Universe.
Even President Juan Manuel Santos has taken time out during a trip to France to congratulate the 22-year-old for her "historic" title.
Colombians are obsessed with beauty and pageants are a major draw. But while neighbouring Venezuela has won seven Miss Universe titles, Colombians are accustomed to finishing runner-up.
The only other Colombian Miss Universe is 76-year-old Luz Marina Zuluaga. She says the honour is "long overdue."
Vega's hometown is known for South America's most-raucous Carnival after Rio de Janeiro. It's also the birthplace of two other globally distinguished beauties: singer Shakira and actress Sofia Vergara.
