President of the committee, Dr Janece McDonald identified 2015 as a crucial year for the campaign to get the museum up and running either in an existing historical building or in a brand new site.
“By the end of 2015 we would like to have secured some corporate and government funding as well as identified a brick-and-mortar building for the museum,” Dr McDonald said.
“My end of year goal is a vibrant, engaging space.”
The museum committee has also cited this year’s Anzac centenary as a particularly visible reminder of Maitland’s need for a dedicated museum space.
Despite the challenges, the organisation has successfully locked down two exhibitions exploring the Anzacs and the First World War.
“We’re partnering with The Australian War Memorial to bring A Camera on Gallipoli to Brough House in April and, in October, another exhibition in partnership with the Department of Trade and Investment highlighting the role of tunnellers and miners from the local area in the war,” Dr McDonald said.
Dr McDonald said the biggest challenge in the coming year will be funding, which will have to come from the corporate sector as well as state and federal government.
“We’re finalising our charity status, that should be complete very soon and then we can start raising the funds we need,” she said.
Dr McDonald said she hopes local businesses will come forward and help the committee create a suitable space that work in tandem with Maitland Regional Art Gallery.
“You only need to look at MRAG to see how good it can be. We want people to go there for a coffee and art and wander over to visit us for some history too”
