Roads and Maritime Services should earmark money for more solar-powered speed limit signs for Maitland roads, independent state election candidate Philip Penfold says.

There are already five large solar powered signs in the city that can be placed at different speeding hot spots to encourage safer driving.
Maitland has five solar powered signs, three that Maitland City Council bought and two that were funded by RMS.
The signs are used on local roads in Maitland.
One is located at Tocal Road, Bolwarra, another at Belmore Road, Lorn, while a third has been placed at Fairfax Street, Rutherford, after ongoing complaints about speeding.
One of the signs is at council’s depot and is scheduled to be placed at McKimms Road, Largs, soon.
The fifth sign is in need of repair.
Cr Penfold, also a Maitland councillor, said the signs were a cheap and effective way to make the region’s roads safer.
He said each sign would cost between $5500 and $6500.
Cr Penfold said he would advocate for Maitland to get more funding if he was elected on March 28 and he hoped to at least double the number of signs in the city.
“These are great tools and we could do with more than five,” he said.
“I hear a lot of people complain about people speeding in their street, many people think their’s is the worst street for speeding in Maitland.
“The signs are very bright and stand out.
“If we had more of them the need to move them around would lessen.”
