Transport Minister and Minister for the Hunter Gladys Berejiklian said government planners had begun to investigate the need for a new train station in Oakhampton or one of the nearby suburbs of Maitland.
She said forecast population growth in Maitland would mean extra demand for infrastructure in the region.
“Obviously the growth in Maitland is phenomenal, so we’re looking very closely at that,” Ms Berejiklian said.
“We’ve got our planning people looking at whether we need a new station and where would it be.
“We’re in the very initial stages of that, simply because the growth here is so huge.
“We’re doing what we can to support existing infrastructure and planning for the future.”
