And now the creative minds behind Maitland’s Upstage Youth Theatre will present the magical children’s classic The Secret Garden.
Adapted from the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Secret Garden tells a tale of sorrow turned to joy when a young girl teaches a family how to love again by tending their garden.
“The beautiful message in this story is this whole idea of the transformative power of nature,” theatre director Ann Coates said.
“For me, when life gets crazy and you get caught in the daily grind and you have to work out the logistics of how it’s all going to happen the garden makes me happy.
“The act of literally pulling out a carrot, although it may sound twee, forces you to slow down and you feel more at peace.”
Coates said the young cast has also embraced the sentiments of the classic tale.
“Young people live in a world on instant gratification so a story like this shows them that you need to slowly care for things and how giving love is how you get it in return,” she said.
The Secret Garden will be staged at Maddie’s of Bolwarra from April 17 until May 2 at 7.30pm. For tickets email upstageyouththeatre.com.au
