And that’s the workers.
The tradies whose every paver and line of grout has been celebrated or slammed across social media. The toilers who pulled out all stops to ensure the Taste Festival could go ahead, despite the project’s incomplete state.
The very people who, earlier this month, so impressed High Street stalwart Tracey Golledge that she came out to publicly praise their efforts.
Ms Golledge was quick to point out that workers faced a lot of negativity.
They were, she reminded us, just people trying to do their jobs, the best they could, even in searing heat and sometimes rain.
The picture Ms Golledge painted was a crew of “hard-working, top young blokes” who manned their tools from dawn ’til dusk and went the extra mile for shoppers and shopkeepers alike.
It is disgusting to think that these contractors, working in the heart of our city, have been literally robbed of the tools of their trades.
An estimated $25,000 worth of tools were stolen from Landscape Solutions’ temporary office on High Street. Most of it came from these workers’ personal toolkits.
Landscape Solutions supervisor Matt Herbert said yesterday that a police forensic team was investigating the incident.
The Mercury understands that workers are yet to learn if their tools are covered by insurance.
The Levee project has had its share of brickbats and bouquets. But the workers should not have to cop this.
Let’s get these tools back. If you know anything, please call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
