I think there is an important element to this election going unnoticed and unsaid.

The commitments made by the government and opposition are not subject to their candidate being elected as member for Maitland. They are only subject to their party forming government.
Therefore it would be wrong of voters to think electing an ALP local member will result in local commitments promised coming through unless they form government (which polling tells us is very unlikely) and vice versa.
Should the people of Maitland elect the independent candidate the promises of the government of the day will be fulfilled.
Further, I’d like voters to understand the importance of preferences.
No party or candidate in the lower house can allocate your preference for you.
Only the individual voter can.
Voters can ensure their vote doesn’t exhaust by numbering more than just the “1”, by writing “2” for their second choice, and so on. This election is important for Maitland’s future.
Value your vote.
- Philip Penfold, Independent candidate for Maitland
