His only hope for that is if there is a hung parliament, otherwise history shows that both major parties regard independents as opposition.
A hung parliament is highly unlikely because polls have been increasingly accurate in recent years, and last Sunday, March 22, both the Ipsos and Galaxy polls continued the long-term trend which had the government leading by the large margin of 54 per cent to 46 per cent on a two-party preferred basis.
