For 25 years this group has been working in Maitland, using their unique talents and love for others to help those who know their time is limited.
And for the past seven years, Volunteers for Palliative Care Inc
have been able to use extensive ground floor premises at Benhome Home for the Aged, paying a small rental fee.
For this privilege, Volunteers for Palliative Care have been very grateful.
But times are changing and Benhome Home for the Aged has plans for its future too, which involve working toward its own extensive redevelopment.
The volunteers are not being asked to leave Benhome, but the clouds are on the horizon.
The Volunteers for Palliative Care know the time has come to begin looking for new premises.
“We realise we must be proactive and look for a new place,”co-ordinator Judith Robinson said.
“But the challenge is huge – we believe between $13,000 and $15,000 is the extra cost we face of renting commercial premises.
“We have never had to face anything like this before and we don’t know how we are going to find such a sum.”
Ms Robinson has already issued a plea to anyone or any organisation who can help them to get a place that is easy for their volunteers to access and where possible clients can visit.
For so long, the Volunteers for Palliative Care have answered a need that few of us could meet.
It would be really good if we in Maitland might now be able to meet their needs.
