The Anzac slab was presented in the competition as the Diggers would have received their ration – wrapped in brown paper – but it was only one of several different cakes children entered this year.
Lorn’s Sienna Payne was placed first in the competition with the Anzac slab in her first year in the competition.
Sienna, her sister Tara, and their cousins Nichola Baker, Chyanne Roberts and Riley Smith are all great grandchildren of Maitland CWA treasurer June Gardner.
“We learnt from the best,” Tara, 11, said.
Mrs Gardner had the great- grandchildren bake the cakes at her Lambs Valley home for the competition.
Riley had previously been to the state CWA finals.
“It’s the first time the girls have entered,” Mrs Gardner said.
Nichola claimed first prize with her speedway cake, so called because it is made in one bowl.
Tara placed second in this class.
Riley again displayed great skill to win the crusty lemon loaf class.
Chyanne finished second.
The adult classes were well contested.
Mrs Gardner showed the great grandchildren how it was done with first prizes in the steamed fruit pudding, kiwi jam and mint jelly classes.
Barbara Heckman claimed first in the Donna Latter memorial cake section and first in the pear and ginger cake.
Margaret Harvey finished first in the orange cake class and second in the Donna Latter cake section.
Chris Meyers was first in the fruit cake, sultana cake, marble cake and Zebra cake classes and second in the pear and ginger cake.
While the women and children produced some great cakes but did not progress to the state competition.
“Everybody seems to enjoy the competition,” Mrs Gardner said.
