And in the case of Addalyn Clements this couldn't be more true.

A week ago the Maitland Mercury told the story of Addy - a little girl in desperate need of a bone marrow transplant to save her life.

Since then, Addy's plight has reached the airwaves, with NEW FM radio station picking up the cause and many Hunter residents coming forward to join the bone marrow registry.

"The response has been quite chaotic, which is fantastic," Addy's mother, Rachael Clements, said.

"But this isn't just great for Addy, it's also great news for other future recipients."

Addy, of Tenambit, has been diagnosed with two rare cancers in the past 18 months.

If she doesn't receive a bone marrow transplant within six months, she will die.

So, with no suitable matches in Addy's family, the search has now gone worldwide.

"In the event a match from a family member is unavailable, Australians in need of a bone marrow transplant can turn to the Australian Bone Marrow Registry," Australian Red Cross Blood Service spokeswoman Jemma Falkenmire said.

"A search includes both locally and globally registered donors and the registry has access to almost 23 million global donors and 175,180 Australian donors."

The registry is currently focused on the ethnic diversity of Australia's donor base.

"This is particularly important for patients from new and emerging communities whose country of ancestry may or may not have a local registry, as well as patients from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island backgrounds who rely solely on the local registry," Ms Falkenmire said.

Addy's story has also attracted 200 new followers to the Unicorns for Addy Facebook page, while more than $700 (of a $10,000 goal) has been raised on the family's Go Fund Me page also named Unicorns for Addy.

NEW FM will hold a blood donor drive to find a bone marrow donor for Addy at the Bloodbank, Watt Street, Newcastle, on Tuesday from 6.30am until 8.30am.
