Graham Rutter from Sea Shanty Rutherford said medium king prawns fresh from the Hunter would be selling for about $29 per kilogram for the weekend.
Blue swimmer crabs were proving a popular choice, as well as Balmain bugs, which were a good cost-savings option for those who wanted shellfish.
Prawn prices ranged from $20 to $30 per kilogram across the Hunter, with most sellers advertising king prawns from Newcastle at the higher end of the price range.
“Easter is more about fish than Christmas,” Newcastle’s Commercial Fisherman’s Co-operative manager Robert Gauta said.
“Prawns are always popular, but Easter is about fish.”
He said salmon, flathead, snapper and swordfish were top picks for Easter, especially for those buying locally.
“The local, fresh message is starting to gain traction,” Mr Gauta said.
“If you are in doubt about whether something is imported, just ask to be shown the local seafood.”
Johleane Gorton from Take Seafood Away Cafe said flathead fillets were one of the most popular orders for this Easter long-weekend.
The Aberglasslyn cafe sells a small selection of fresh seafood, including the medium prawns from Newcastle.
“We also have oysters from Nelson Bay for Easter,” she said.
