Baldy, Ginger and Sid are not your usual celebrities, they are camels from Oakfield Ranch.
“It’s a bit wild,” Oakfield Ranch owner Rod Sansom said.
“The first thing I thought was, ‘the camels can’t go in the Opera House’.”
The camels are no strangers to the limelight and appear in advertisements and films internationally, but this is the first time they have participated in an opera.
They have already starred in two of the performances on an outdoor stage on Sydney Harbour.
In the opera, Aida is an Ethiopian princess captured by the Egyptians.
The story follows Egyptian military commander, Radamès, who has to choose between his love for Aida, his loyalty to the Pharaoh and the Pharaoh’s daughter Amneris, who is in love with him.
Aida rides Sid the camel into the show and the three camels play their parts in the first half of the opera.
“It is a really good show,” Diane Gooley from the ranch said.
“We never get to see the end though because we have to go and get the camels at the intermission.”
Baldy, Ginger and Sid are part of a herd of 50 camels.
When they are not acting, they take tourists for rides along the sand dunes of Port Stephens.
The camels recently filmed the Meat and Livestock Australia 2016 campaign advertisement to promote lamb on Australia Day.
They were hired for a spot at the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards, held in Sydney in February, and Ruby the camel even starred in the 2008 film Nim’s Island.
Aida is a Handa Opera production that runs until April 26.
