While the transplant procedure won’t cost the Beresfield mother a cent, the accommodation required for Seth’s care following the operation is about $95 a night.
Initially, the single mother thought she would be eligible for a donor’s grant, but this was not the case.
“We will need to stay in Sydney, near the hospital, for six to eight weeks after the transplant and that’s going to cost quite a bit of money,” Ms Bunt, 37, said.
“And that doesn’t include childcare for my youngest child and our normal daily living costs.”
With no other option Ms Bunt – also mother to Libby, 15, and Max, 10 months – has turned to the community to help raise the money she needs.
“I have exhausted all avenues, so now I need to ask for help from the community,” she said.
“There is little to no government funding when it comes to something like this.”
Seth was born with a kidney disease known as renal dysplasia and during the past year his condition has drastically worsened.
“Seth’s kidneys have never formed properly and he’s functioning on about 5 per cent now,” Ms Bunt said.
“We reached crunch time at the end of last year and we started looking for a compatible donor and I was the only choice.
“Without this transplant, Seth would have to go on dialysis and he’s only a child.
“Most people don’t know Seth is sick, he doesn’t look it and he still goes to school, but it’s a different story on the inside.”
The transplant is scheduled to take place next month at Sydney’s Westmead Hospital.
“During the past nine years there have been many trips back and forth to Sydney for treatment and it’s a financial struggle to get by ... I wouldn’t wish this on anyone,” she said.
“I am hoping that, with a little help, I will be able to focus solely on my son’s health, and not have to worry so much about money.”
Ms Bunt has turned to crowd funding to help raise $5500.
