But when it comes to Maitland Musical Society, well, these guys can.
Hot on the heels of the cinematic modern fairy tale Into the Woods, the local musical theatre group will present the stage adaption of the award-winning musical.
“We decided to give Into the Woods a go, partly because the movie (starring Streep and Depp) came out in January, but also because it’s such an interesting musical,” member Amber Lewis said.
Into the Woods is a modern twist on several beloved fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests.
The humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderalla, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk and Rapunzel, tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife, their wish to begin a family, and their interaction with the witch, who has put a curse on them.
“This musical is very challenging and it’s not everybody’s cup of tea because it’s often not what people expect, but I think that’s also its selling point,” Lewis, who also plays Cinderella, said.
Into The Woods also features Jenny Ingles as the witch, Guilherme Noronha as the baker, Melissa Ingles as his wife, Alcy Mannen as Little Red Riding Hood, Maddie Watts as Rapunzel and Michael Andrews as the narrator.
The play will be staged at St John’s Hall, Maitland, on May 8, 9 and 10.
