Trainers from Royal Life Savers visited the school over three days earlier this month after they received funding from the Orica Newcastle Community Investment Program.
Royal Life Saving Hunter regional manager Tanya Brunckhorst said the skills learnt from the three sessions were for more than resume building.
“These are life skills that every citizen should make an effort to learn,” Mrs Brunckhorst said.
“They’re not just for drowning; they make these guys aware of what to do if there’s a car accident or any other emergency situation.”
Each student received the Provide First Aid and Provide CPR certification, which are nationally recognised.
Year 11 student Danielle Keith said the training had given her confidence and the ability to react in situations where she would have previously panicked.
“I wanted to learn because there’s a rush in helping people,” Danielle said.
“I want to be a photographer but I guess I could consider becoming a paramedic.”
