Historic locomotives dotted central Maitland during the weekend as people enjoyed market stalls, food and locomotive-themed entertainment in the railway station precinct as part of the Maitland City Council-run festival.
Council events co-ordinator Adam Franks said the feedback had been overwhelmingly positive.
He said attendance this year had been on par with the 2014 event.
“There was a really good turn out on Saturday,” Mr Franks said. “It has all gone really smoothly.”
Mr Franks said the steam train ride between Maitland and the Port Waratah coal yard was the one of the most popular attractions this year.
Another new event, the tractor pull was also a hit with visitors.
A Tiger Moth aeroplane beat two steam trains to win this year’s Great Train Race, and the show and shine event for vintage cars attracted hundreds of entrants.
“The trips to Port Waratah, which was a first for Steamfest, were sold out and the rally ground was really well patronised this year,” Mr Franks said.
“The Great Train Race is always a highlight of the program each year.”
Maitland police said the crowds had been well-behaved during the event.
They also said that there had not been any major problems caused by the road closures in central Maitland, which affected many streets around the train station.
