Cecilia Low told how the shopping trip and lunch with her father ended in a nightmare as they drove into the water surging across the street.
“I did not expect the water to be so deep,” Mrs Low told The Mercury.
“We had also been shopping and were on our way home when it happened,” she said.
“Suddenly there was water everywhere, the car stopped and we were helpless.
“It was so very scary.
“I managed to open a door and the water rushed in.
“My father was just sitting there and he said he was very cold.
“I was very worried about him and wondered what we could do, because the car would not go.
“But suddenly two men appeared and they picked my father up and took him out of the car.
“I was so very grateful to them both.”
Trevor Rogers said he was alerted to an elderly man in the car during the height of the storm.
“I was with another man and we saw the car was stuck in the water,” Mr Rogers said.
“There was water flooding into the car too.
“Then the police arrived and together we took the man from the vehicle.”
Mark Mackenzie said he lived across the road and he heard call that someone was in distress.
“We saw a man sitting in a car in the middle of the water,” Mr Mackenzie said.
“The rain was pelting down, the car was swaying about and people were calling for help. They were trying to get an elderly passenger from the vehicle.
“Working together, we all managed to open the door and take him to safety.”
Mrs Low said her father was fine after the ordeal and sleeping thanks to the people who had come to their aid.
“I say to them all: ‘Thank you so very much,” she said.
