The tree smashed and destroyed a caravan that was sitting in the yard, which residents of the Schanck Drive home Debbie and Craig Cameron bought less than a month ago.

Mrs Cameron said she had lived in the house for 18 years and had often worried about the potential for the tree to uproot in strong winds.

She said the family discovered that the tree had begun to lean when they woke about 4am yesterday to the sound of another tree that had fallen in the street and blocked the road.

“Then we had another look and it was on even more of an angle,” Mrs Cameron said.

“There were holes [at the base of the tree] big enough to put your hands in.

“I went and woke the neighbours and within about half an hour it was on a 45 degree angle so we didn’t have enough time to move anything because it was just too dangerous.”

Mrs Cameron said she saw the tree to continue to lean on more of an angle before it finally fell into her front yard.

“It was just horrifying,” she said. “It was so loud and there was a cracking noise and a huge bang. It was all scary.”

The family had only just finished putting a new roof on the home last week.

Mrs Cameron said she had not seen damage in the street like what had occurred this week.

Not far down the road, wind had uprooted a large tree which fell into a two storey house on Willow Drive and damaged the roof.
