The club has cancelled its final race of the year on Sunday with Maitland Pool unfit for swimming.

The Maitland Rams will be one of the few clubs able to ­compete. The Rams’ Maitland Park facility has been given the all clear for their Hunter Coast Premier Hockey League fixture against University on Sunday.

The Maitland Mustangs and Maitland Magpies will make final assessments on Friday about their respective upcoming basketball and football fixtures.

At this stage, the Mustangs will attempt to defend the Kibble Mallon Cup against arch rivals the Newcastle Hunters at Maitland Federation Centre on Saturday at 7pm, but water damage to the courts will be inspected before the Anzac Day clash. 

The Magpies are scheduled to play at home in a Northern NSW National Premier League ­battle against Newcastle Jets Youth at Cooks Square Park on Sunday from 2.30pm. 

Maitland Greyhound Club ­cancelled Thursday’s twilight meeting and there will be no racing on Wednesday or Thursday either.

Greyhounds NSW has deemed the Maitland Showground’s flooded track and electric boxes unusable.

Newcastle Harness Racing Club was able to proceed Thursday night, albeit with reduced fields because some trainers were isolated because of floodwater.

The club will host a seven-race card at Newcastle International Paceway on Saturday night.

Newcastle and Hunter Rugby Union called off their scheduled Friday night games, including Maitland’s away clash to Singleton, earlier in the week.

Newcastle Rugby League, including first grade clubs the Maitland Pickers and Kurri Kurri Bulldogs, had already set aside this weekend for a bye to mark the Anzac centenary. 

Maitland Netball Association has yet to start their season with round one scheduled for May 2.

Further afield this weekend and the Weston Bears will know on Friday if their third round Northern NSW National Premier League match against South Cardiff at Ulinga Oval on Sunday will go ahead.

And both Thornton Redbacks top grade sides are away on Sunday. The women will tackle Mid North Coast and the men take on Singleton at Howe Park. 

A blanket closure has been issued for all Newcastle City Council grounds this weekend.
