That section of highway had been shut since Friday after Wallis Creek spilled onto the road.
This forced motorists to detour across the Hunter River at Harry Boyle Bridge, travel through Lorn and over the Belmore Bridge at Maitland if travelling east to west.
The problem was partially alleviated earlier on Sunday when an alternative route using the old eastern end of High Street was implemented.
The highway remains shut between the Maitland Station roundabout and the Maitland Hospital roundabout.
